Climb a mountain. Canoe a twenty-mile long lake. Carry everything you need on your back. Feel tired and totally exhilarated after a full day on the trail. Gaze at the stars each night. Go somewhere you’ve never been before. And, do all this with a group of friends who are on the same amazing adventure — and be totally excited about it!
The purpose of the Maine Expedition is to create a community in which each person learns to enjoy being in the wilderness, learns about the natural history of Maine, and becomes a member of an expedition group that lives and works well together.
Those who join this amazing journey will begin at the Cobscook Community Learning Center on the shores of Whiting Bay in Trescott, Maine. For the first three days we will get to know one another, we will learn how to use the gear that will sustain us on our travels, and we will practice hiking and canoeing skills that we’ll rely on in the mountains and on the waters of western Maine. Then we’ll load up our expedition bus and travel to the Bigelow Mountains where we’ll strap on our backpacks for a five-day hike. After a day of showers and reloading supplies, we’ll head to the West Branch of the Penobscot River north of Moosehead Lake to enjoy a five day, sixty-mile canoe trip down the river and across Chesuncook Lake. We’ll learn what it means to travel safely, respectfully, and with a sense of wonder and inquiry through some of Maine’s most exquisite natural areas. We’ll finish back at the CCLC with new skills to share, stories to tell, and friends to stay in touch with. |
